A group of landowners in the area around Joy Rd, Burl, Joy Ridge, Joy Woods, Lauri, and Jennifer have come together to create a collective vision for stewarding our forests into the future, we want to invite you to participate in creating a Community Forest Stewardship Plan.
Our group is inspired by the idea we can increase the health of our forest and decrease the risks of fire by learning more and working together.
We recognize that each property and landowner is unique. We believe that by creating a joint community vision where everyone can have a voice in its development, we are likely to learn and achieve things we cannot do alone.
Thus far we have 32 neighbors committed to moving forward. Our outreach to invite everyone’s involvement includes a few prior on-line discussions that were recorded and available for you to view. Your voice will be very important to our process, whether you decide to join the group actively supporting the planning, or just following what we are doing. Our hope is that everyone participates, at whatever level you like so you are informed along the way as we develop our forest stewardship community.
We have gathered a smaller volunteer Steering Committee that is driving the process. If you are interested in joining our steering committee, please let us know. The Steering Committee currently is: Amy Beilharz - Marc Dunia - David Shatkin - Jackie Screechfield - Kevin Rowell, *Mataji aka Carol Singler. You can reach us at JoyWoodsForest@gmail.com

We have two main purposes.
First is creating an “official document” The Forest Management Plan which is to support us to get financial assistance caring for our forest. This forest management plan document will not tell you what to do, it will only bring information and the necessary documentation to assist you should you or the community decide on a project. We each are in charge of our own property and choices and some people will choose to work with neighbors on joint projects.
Goldridge Resource Conservation District (GRCD) has committed to fund 90% of the resources required to create our Plan… which we are calling “The Joy Woods Community Forest Stewardship Plan.” Goldridge will pay the forester to document our community objectives, provide data on our forest, and offer various options for meeting our objectives, including identifying what outside funding is available and what the requirements are for each.
Our SECOND goal is building a strong community —supporting us to be informed, to share our input, and to gather educational information about best care practices for out forest. A core team is finding other experts to help us discern what things we can do to improve the health and resilience of our forest for generations to come. We will be bringing in various experts, gathering info and creating a virtual online library of resources and educational materials specific to our ecosystem that we can reference for years to come.
The Process to participate in this is:
1. Take our survey We want everyone's input on what their priorities are for our forests. Click on the survey link and add your voice to our plan, whether you join or not.
2. If you are able, contribute only $50 to help cover our 10% portion of the costs not paid for by the Grant from Goldridge RCD.

2. If you are able, contribute only $50 to help cover our 10% portion of the costs not paid for by the Grant from Goldridge RCD. The total plan cost is approximately $15,000. If you cannot pay $50. we already have neighbors willing to shoulder a larger fee to ensure more people participate. If you are someone who can pay more to cover those who cannot, please do so. We would like you to respond by July 4th.
3. Attend meetings, get involved to the level you are would like to participate.
4. You can send a check to Jackie Screechfield at XXXX or, pay via credit card and PayPal here.
Our next steps are:
1. Compile survey results.
2. Draft our community objectives from the survey, get community feedback, and finalize a set of objectives to become the driving ethos of our “Joy Woods Community Stewardship Plan.”
3. Interview and select the required forester to author our Forest Stewardship plan.
4. Identify and solicit input from experts in the fields of redwood forest health, ecology, soil health, and other key areas to help educate us as a community and inform our plan.
5. After gathering input, data, and reviewing recommendations for how we can best steward our forests, the community will finalize a
“Joy Woods Community Forest Stewardship Plan”.
Everyone is welcome to be part of our plan, whether you can afford to pay or not. Some neighbors have committed to fund more than $50 to help those who are unable. Please pay $50, if you can, but don't let money keeping from participating in helping this be a community-wide discussion. If you are someone who can put a bit more in, please do so.
NOTE: To send a larger (or smaller) amount, please send money via PayPal to JoyWoodsForest@gmail.com
We will keep a posting of money received and money spent on the resource page
